Adding New Massage Treatments to the Menu

Tuesday, September 17th, 2013

It is no secret that people love having options.  Whether shopping for a new vehicle, getting groceries for dinner, or going to a spa for a relaxing afternoon, people want to be able to have a variety of products or services to decide between.  For massage therapists, offering a large menu of treatments and services will greatly increase the variety of clients that come in and will also give additional options for your current regular customers to try as well.

Here are just a few of the many exciting additions that a massage therapist can easily add to their repertoire.

Bamboo massage is a wonderful way to add a new organic option for clients who are looking for more pressure than the hand can provide.  Many massage therapists warm their massage bamboo, which adds another enjoyable sensation to the massage.  Because bamboo sticks are a natural item, many clients feel a connection with the Earth through bamboo massage.  This is a timeless way to rejuvenate the body that is at once ancient and modern.

Stone massage is similar to bamboo massage in that it uses natural resources but with differences as well.  Many massage therapists offer both hot and cold stone therapy, depending on the desired results.

Hot stone massage is extremely soothing and relaxing, and can be an excellent way to reduce stress or back pain. Cold stone massage is an excellent way to reduce inflammation and swelling.  It can also be used for menstrual pains, sinus problems, to increase circulation, and just to reduce stressful feelings1.  It is important to make sure that the client is not sensitive to temperature before administering hot or cold stones.  Certain medical conditions may also prevent some clients from safely enjoying hot or cold stone massage, so be sure to evaluate medical history first.

There are other popular treatments that can add a new dimension to a massage session.  Thai massage, yoga, various stretches and exercises, herbs and wraps, and more can all be great ways to keep things more exciting for both you and for the client.  Doing the same massage over and over will get old fast, for both the person performing the massage and for the people coming in.  While consistency is important, diversity is as well.

How a Portable Massage Table Can Improve Business

Monday, September 16th, 2013

Massage therapists have a unique career in many ways.  One of the most common reasons why people get into massage therapy is because of the immense amount of freedom that the job can offer.  There are many different places for a massage therapist to find employment, or often they will venture out on their own, working freelance or opening their own practice.  Regardless of the path that you choose, having a portable table is certainly essential!

The table is the most important tool for the massage therapist, besides the hands.  This is where the patient will spend the majority of the session, which is why it is essential that they are comfortable for the duration of their visit.  A shoddy table will make a poor impression, even if it functions fine.

A portable massage table is often the first piece of equipment that a massage therapist purchases.  It can be all too easy to skimp on quality when buying a first table, but most experts would recommend buying quality for the first time.  Not only will this allow you to meet your fullest potential performance-wise, but it will also save you from having to replace it later on when things become more serious.  If you are truly dedicated to a career in massage therapy, a good portable table will be a long-term investment in your future.

Even if you are not planning on being a traveling massage therapist, you may be surprised by how often you end up using your portable table.  You may also have clients who will pay extra for in-house visits.  It is not uncommon for a patient to be immobile, which may prevent them from being able to travel.  With a portable table, it can be easy to make some extra income.

Like any business, it is important for massage therapists to promote themselves.  Many massage therapists will coordinate events where they give short massages to try to drum up some extra business.  Setting up a portable table at a sporting event, a hotel, corporate event, or any other place where passersby may want a massage is an excellent way to let people know about your services and earn some money at the same time.

It is quite clear that there are plenty of reasons to get a portable massage table, including the flexibility to provide massages when and where you want to expand your business and visibility.

Enhancing a Massage Session with Tools

Friday, July 26th, 2013

Many techniques can be performed the perfect massage.  Each and every client is going to have different needs and preferences which is why it is so important to have a large arsenal of tools at your disposal.  What works for one person may not be ideal for another.  If you want to make each massage session as effective and enjoyable as it can possibly be, you are going to want to have an array of tools ready for use.

Although some massage purists may say that using the hands is the only way to really get the job done right, most modern massage therapists use various products and tools to extend their range and enhance their results.  There are items that can help the massage therapist to do things that may not have been possible with just human ability.  Few clients would disagree about taking an extra step to achieve the best possible result.

Most massage therapists will use tools only when they cannot achieve the same results with their hands, elbows, knuckles, fists, or forearms.1  Even if it could be done easier with a tool, there is no doubt that human to human touch is going to be more effective and accurate than a device.  When a person requires more pressure than the therapist is capable of, if vibration is required, or if a certain shape is needed to really dig in, a massage therapist may utilize a massage tool to achieve the desired results.

Massage tools are not just for helping the clients to feel the best that they possibly can; they also help the massage therapist to avoid injury.  Most massage therapists see multiple clients per day, and there is no doubt that this can take its toll on their body.  Massage therapists exert a large amount of energy in each session and sometimes tools can allow them to save their strength while still achieving optimal results.

Sometimes, massage therapists will recommend certain products to their clients that they can use for their own selfcare.  There are self-massagers that can be used to relieve pain, such as the popular Thera-cane that allows people to get knots out of those hard to reach spots in the back.  There are also items like the simple but effective Knobble that can be used with the help of another person, allowing people to bring the healing power of massage therapy into their own home.

There are some patients that may require even more effort than even a person with a hand-held tool can accomplish.  In those cases, it may be necessary to use an electric device, usually that vibrates at a rate that simply isn’t possible naturally.  These can be used to stop spasms by overriding neurological holding patterns.1

A professional is only as good as the tools that they use.  For more than 10 years, Massage Warehouse has been the leading full-service source massage supplies and equipment.  Rely on Massage Warehouse for quality products at competitive prices for an unparalleled one-stop shopping experience so you can focus on serving and healing your clients.

Finding a Massage Table that Meets All of Your Specific Needs

Wednesday, July 24th, 2013

Choosing a massage table can be difficult, especially if you are not sure where to start.  There are plenty of models available, with various features and amenities that you may or may not need.  It can be difficult to wade through the myriad of options that are available, especially if you are not familiar with massage tables.  Here are some tips to help you to make an informed decision.

First, it is important to figure out the features that you will require.  When it comes to buying a new massage table, there is no wrong or right; what is perfect for someone else may not be ideal for you.  Remember that you are looking for the table that fits your individual needs.

One of the most obvious decisions that you will need to make is whether you want a stationary table that will remain in one place or a portable table.  If you are setting up one room or more in a single location, you will want a stationary table.  Remember, your table is the treatment platform for business and your clients.  Across 10 years, the cost of your table is only about $.20 per treatment, so don’t skimp on this investment to your success.   If you travel to treat clients, you will want a quality portable table with a carrying case and even a transportation cart.  If you work on site and in a retail location, you will want both types of tables.1

Next, you will need to consider which extra amenities you would like.  Some tables have electric lifts, adjustable legs, tilting abilities, arm rests, and more.  Some table manufacturers also offer options for side lying massages, as well as pregnancy and breast recesses.1  If you are going to see a wide variety of clients on a regular basis, it may be in your best interest to have a table that provides many options.  You never want to have to turn someone away because you don’t have the proper facilities.

There are other factors to consider such as width, upholstery color, and wood type. Some tables even offer a heated top. Also, consider the height.  Your table should be no higher than your hip.2 The bottom line is that only you can really determine which table is right for you.  If you are still at a loss, turn to a full line, one-stop source like MassageWarehouse.com to learn more about your options.

For more than 10 years Massage Warehouse has been committed to offering an extensive and affordable inventory of massage tables and equipment.  Rely on Massage Warehouse to find a massage table that meets all of your specific needs.

Dr. Cohen’s Acuball

Dr. Cohen’s Acuball – As Seen on the Doctor Oz Show

How it works:

The Acuball’s patented design features apply 100% natural acupressure and heat:

1) relaxes tight muscles,

2) enhances joint movement,

3) reduces nervous system irritation,

4) stimulates blood flow to flush out built up muscle wastes,

5) releases natural painkillers and sedatives,

6) improves nervous system energetic flow.

The Acuball’s specially designed acupoints and heat stimulate blood flow. This increases circulation, helping to ‘flush out’ built up toxins that accumulate in tight muscles causing pain. As these toxins release over time the muscle itself relaxes. Direct pressure from the acupoints also massages muscle and mobilizes joints, further enhancing pain free body movement.

The acupoints also stimulate your Central Nervous System, like acupuncture does, to release natural painkilling, relaxing and mood enhancing chemicals like enkephalins and endorphins. Because of this, people who use the Acuball in bed, before retiring for the evening, often report enhanced feelings of relaxation and deeper sleep.

When you use the Acuball on a tender area, you’ll notice that after three or four 20 minute sessions it’s a lot less tender than when you first started. Now you know why: wastes have been flushed out, muscle has been relaxed, joints have been mobilized, and your nervous system is much less irritated…and so are you!

The Acuball’s Unique Design Features

The Acuball’s effectiveness is the result of a number of unique design features:

1) Heatability

If you like the feeling of heat on tight sore muscles, you’ll love the Acuball’s unique patented heating ability. You certainly don’t have to heat it, many people use it at room temperature, but you should try it.  People have remarked countless times that they love the sensation of deep penetrating warmth on sore, achy muscles. Many people love taking a heated Acuball to bed with them.

Why does it feel so good when it’s heated?

Heat expands muscles, causing blood vessels to open up, bringing more blood to tight areas.

This increased blood flow flushes out accumulated wastes, calming irritated nerves and loosening muscles back to their normal relaxed state.

2) Spine Align Belt for Releasing Tight Vertebrae

Many spinal problems come from tight muscles which cause vertebra to lock together, ‘jamming up’ instead of flowing freely. The Spine Align Belt, a precision molded groove running around the middle of the Acuball, allows you to lie directly on the Acuball – opening and loosening your spine one vertebra at a time.

Like pulling an accordion open, this helps to ‘free up’ your spine all the way from your low back up to the top of your neck. The acupoints at the side of the Spine Align Belt also give an acupressure treatment to the important postural muscles running along both sides of your spine (the erector spine muscles), allowing them to open and relax.

Better spinal motion, improved Central Nervous System flow (since your Central Nervous System runs through your spine) and improved posture result.

The area where your neck meets the back of your head is a key area for wellness enhancement. Why? Because it is here that your brain exits your skull and becomes your spinal cord, transmitting vital information to every part of your body. Any tightness here affects your brain’s ability to optimally communicate with your body, so you want this area to be as loose and flexible as possible. Because we spend so much time with our heads bent forward – working, computing and care-giving this area is almost always tight. The Spine Align Belt allows you to open this crucial area, which as you’ll experience for yourself, feels truly wonderful.

 3) Dual Stimulation Zones for Large & Small Muscles

The zone on the bottom of the Acuball has multiple smaller acupoints for doing lighter work like releasing tight muscles in your scalp, face and temples or massaging your child. The larger acupoints on the rest of the Acuball are for deeper work like loosening larger muscles in your neck, legs, hips and low back.

Dr. Cohen’s Acuball Mini

The Acuball-mini’s smaller nibs and harder feel make it perfect for releasing tight muscles in the smaller muscle groups of the body such as the feet, hands, shoulders, upper back, arms and forearms. It is particularly effective in the feet for relieving painful conditions like plantar fascitis.  Athletes (golfers, runners, tennis players) use the Acuball-mini before their activity to loosen problem areas in their feet, shoulders or arms to enhance muscle performance and reduce risk of injury. It’s also an excellent massage tool – try massaging your friend’s shoulders and neck with it!

Kit includes the Acuball, Acuball Mini, 190 page instructional book and 60-minute

Thumbby Soft Massage Cone

Thumbby™ Soft Massage Cone FAQ

Q. What is the Thumbby™ massager made of?

A. The Thumbby™ massager is made of solid silicone, the same material used for many household and personal items. Silicone is non-reactive, meaning it can be used with most massage lotions and oils.

Q. How hard is the Thumbby™ massager?

A. The Thumbby™ massager is approximately the same hardness as a human thumb. In use it is often indistinguishable from a thumb by the person receiving the massage.

Q. How big is the Thumbby™ massager?

A. The Thumbby™ massager is about 3 inches across by 2 inches high, and weighs about 5.5 ounces – small enough to fit in a purse, briefcase, backpack, or carryon.

Q. Is it better to use the Thumbby™ massager dry or with oil?

A. The Thumbby™ massager can be used with or without oil. Each is better for certain types of massage.

  • When the Thumbby™ massager is used dry, it grips the skin. This is good for deep pressure/trigger point work, cross-fiber massage, and vibration (shaking the muscle).

  • When the Thumbby™ massager is used with oil, it glides over the skin. This is good for effleurage (broad strokes using the slope or shoulder of the massager), petrissage (circling movements using the point of the massager), and muscle stripping (slow heavy pressure along the length of a muscle). When using oil with a Thumbby™ massager, use your other hand to guide it.

Q. I’m a small person with weak arms and hands; my partner is very strong and needs deep pressure. How do I use theThumbby™ massager to give deep massage?

A. Thumbby™ massager is designed to let you use body weight instead of strength to achieve deep pressure. Use this method to support your wrist while using body weight:

  1. Hold the massager in your non-dominant hand with the point on the knot you want to loosen.
  2. Make a loose fist with your dominant hand and place your knuckles on the back of the massager, as shown.

  1. Hold the thumb of the non-dominant hand for stability.
  2. Keep your arm and wrist straight and lean into it. Your upper body weight will be transferred to the point of the ThumbbyTM massager.

Q. I have back and shoulder pain, and no one to massage me. Can the Thumbby™ massage tool help me?

A. Yes. The Thumbby™ massager sticks to smooth surfaces, so you can stick it onto your refrigerator (for example) and be able to press the sore places into it. You can also place the massager inside the back of a chair and lean on it. And if you want deeper pressure, you can lie on a Thumbby™ massager on a bed, a futon, or the floor.

CranioCradle FAQ

What is the CranioCradle?

The CranioCradle is a versatile, easy to use massage tool that provides quick, effective relief of stress, tension and pain in the body. This is a great home therapy tool as well as an extra set of hands during a massage therapy session.

What is the CranioCradle made of?

The CranioCradle is made of integral skin polyurethane foam. This soft, compressible foam is similar to memory foam with a protective coating and is 100% recyclable.

How do I clean the CranioCradle?

You can clean the CranioCradle with warm water and liquid soap or with a household sanitizer.

Can I heat or freeze the CranioCradle?

You should not heat or freeze the CranioCradle as it may damage the foam.

Should I use the CranioCradle on a hard or soft surface?

The CranioCradle is best used on a soft surface such as a bed, sofa or massage table for most applications. For trigger point release, it is best to use the CranioCradle on a hard surface such as the floor to provide more pressure.

How long do I use the CranioCradle?

The amount of time you should use the CranioCradle varies, but generally 5-10 therapeutic minutes is all you’ll need.

Will the CranioCradle be damaged when it compresses during use?

The compression of the CranioCradle during use will not cause damage to the tool. The design of the CranioCradle allows it to compress during use and then return to its original shape within seconds after use.

How do I use the CranioCradle?

The CranioCradle can be used under the back of the head, neck and body at specific locations. The CranioCradle can also be used for trigger point release. Instructional videos are available on the CranioCradle Product Page.
